A letter to anyone considering a visit

The Greene Hills Club is a private, member-owned eighteen-hole golf and family country club at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Stanardsville, Virginia. We sit on two hundred acres in Greene County, twenty minutes north of downtown Charlottesville on U.S. Route 29. The course is a Raymond F. Loving Jr. design that opened in 1968, par 71, six thousand four hundred yards from the back tees. We have approximately one thousand member families. Voting Family memberships in 2026 run two hundred eighty-seven dollars a month — about half of every other private club within an hour's drive.

That is the entire pitch. The rest of this page is photographs.

§02 · The course

Eighteen holes, mostly the way Raymond drew them in 1968.

There is an oak in the middle of the seventh fairway that has been there longer than any of the current members. The fifteenth is a four-hundred-sixty-six-yard par four with a handicap of one. The sixth is a par three over water with a view of the ridgeline. The eighteenth finishes beneath the two-story dining deck.

§03 · 2026 Membership

A rate card, not a price grid.

Effective January 1, 2026. Reproduced from the brochure that sits in the pro shop.

A Full Family voting membership at Farmington is reportedly somewhere north of five hundred dollars per month, with an initiation in the tens of thousands. Ours is two hundred eighty-seven, with an initiation of two thousand, paid in installments. We do not have a waiting list. The math is on purpose.

§04 · What else is in

It is not, despite the name, only a golf club.

The same monthly membership covers the twenty-five-meter pool with a slide and a diving board, three pickleball courts, the Hills Grille restaurant with a hundred-seat banquet room downstairs and a two-story dining deck over the eighteenth green, and access to the Jefferson Swim League where the Greene Hills Gators have raced since long before any current kids were born.

§4.5 · What players say

Four point six stars, eighty-five reviews, and not a single one we asked anyone to write.

An absolute gem hidden in the mountains of Greene County, Virginia. The greens are crisp, full, and roll true. The fairways are immaculate.

An amazing private club north of Charlottesville not far from Shenandoah National Park. One of the better layouts and is worth playing if you are able to.

§05 · Heritage

Fifty-nine seasons in Greene County.

The club was incorporated in 1967 by a group of Greene County families who wanted a private course in their county. Raymond F. Loving Jr., ASGCA, routed eighteen holes on the property the following year. The course opened in 1968 and has been played continuously since.

We have not added a tennis court since 1981. We added pickleball in 2022 because three members kept asking. Most decisions get made like that.

§06 · A short list of omissions

The things, on purpose, we are not.

  • 01

We do not have valet parking.

If you cannot park your own car, this is probably not the right course for your seven-iron either.

  • 02

We do not have a tennis program.

There used to be a tennis court. The membership voted, twice, to keep it as pickleball.

  • 03

We do not have a spa.

There is, however, a wading pool for the very small, and a slide for the slightly less small.

  • 04

We do not have a dress code we publish.

If you have to ask, the answer is collared.

  • 05

We do not have a sales office.

If you want a tour, call Mike at extension one and tell him what kind of golf you play. He will pick the right tee time.

  • 06

We do not have a waiting list.

We have a board, a budget, and an honest conversation when membership classes are full. They have not been full since 2007.

§07 · Visiting

Membership tours are by appointment. Call Mike or Bill, and tell them what kind of player you are.
