About · Greene County, Virginia · Established 1967

A private family club, at the foot of the Blue Ridge, twenty minutes north of Charlottesville.

Founded in 1967. Eighteen holes opened a year later. Two hundred private acres. Approximately one thousand member families today. Run by a member board, with nearly six decades of board minutes in the back office to prove it.

History

Five and a half decades, mostly the same.

Greene Hills was incorporated in 1967 by a group of Greene County families who wanted a golf course in their county. Raymond F. Loving Jr. routed eighteen holes on the property the following year. The course opened in 1968, the pool followed shortly after, and the club has been adding amenities slowly ever since: tennis (eventually pickleball), the swim team, a fully renovated Hills Grille, a second story over the eighteenth green.

We've never been the biggest club in central Virginia, and we've never been the most expensive. What we've been, for almost sixty years, is a real one — owned by its members, run by its board, kept honest by the families who treat it like a second home.

The land

Two hundred acres, sitting where the Piedmont starts to climb.

The property sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, north of Charlottesville and west of Stanardsville. The eighteenth green faces west, which is why we built the second story of the Grille over it — to catch the sun coming down behind the ridgeline. On a clear evening in October, it's the prettiest view in Greene County.

The course is bordered by woods on most holes and farmland on the rest. Deer cross the fifteenth fairway. Wild turkey nest behind the seventh tee. The maintenance crew under Rodney Taylor keeps the playing surfaces in shape; the rest of the property mostly takes care of itself.

Governance

Member-owned. Member-run.

Greene Hills is a 501(c)(7) recreational and social club, owned by its voting members and governed by a board of directors elected from the membership. Our board minutes, financials, and committee assignments are posted in the member portal and made available to prospective members on request.

We employ approximately seventy-nine staff during the season, led by PGA Professional Mike Moyers and Business Manager Bill Cave. Most of them have been here longer than most of the members.
