By 11 am on a Saturday in July, the deck is full of families, the slide is in continuous use, and Julie has the lifeguard roster running like clockwork. By 4 pm, the older kids are doing flip-turns in the lap lanes.

The Greene Hills Gators is the club's competitive summer swim team and a long-standing member of the Jefferson Swim League — a Central Virginia summer league running since 1969 with roughly twenty member teams from Charlottesville, Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, Madison and the surrounding counties.

The Gators compete in dual meets through June and July, culminating in JSL Championships at the UVA Aquatic & Fitness Center each July. Practice begins in early June with morning sessions for school-age swimmers and afternoon sessions for the youngest groups.

Patrick runs morning practice, the meet schedule, and the social glue that keeps the team feeling like a family across the generations. His five-coach staff is mostly former Gators, home from college for the summer or returning year after year.

A few rules we actually enforce.
For the youngest swimmers.

  • Children under 10 must be accompanied by someone 13 or older at all times.
  • Children under 13 must pass a proficiency test to be unaccompanied in the pool area or diving area.
  • Guests are limited to two visits per month per member family.
  • Immediate family members cannot serve as caregivers for the age supervision rules above.

When is the pool at The Greene Hills Club open?
The Greene Hills Club pool opens Memorial Day Weekend and closes Labor Day. Hours are Sunday through Thursday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday and Saturday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The pool closes at 3:00 pm on days when the club hosts Jefferson Swim League meets.
How big is the pool?
The main pool is 25 meters long, with a slide, a diving board, and dedicated lap lanes. A separate wading pool serves younger members. All lifeguards are American Red Cross certified.
Can children swim unaccompanied?
Children under 13 must pass a swim proficiency test administered by the lifeguards before they may be in the pool area unaccompanied. Children under 10 must be supervised by someone 13 years or older at all times. Immediate family members cannot serve as supervisors for these purposes.

How much does the Swim Team Youth Pass cost?
For non-member households who want their child to participate on the Gators, the Swim Team Youth Pass is $278 for the 2026 season (18 and under). This includes use of the pool and team participation. Voting and Hills membership families have pool access included in their dues.
Can I host a pool party?
Yes. Member-hosted pool parties are available for a nominal fee. Contact Julie Mitchelson, Pool Manager, at 434-985-7328 extension 5 for availability and pricing.
